Typical timeframes when importing a vehicle

The time taken to source a vehicle for you will vary greatly on the car you want, your budget, the features you desire and how picky you are. As a rough guide vehicles are usually sourced within 1 to 8 weeks but it will be different for each situation, and we can advise you in advance if a particular car or features will be difficult to find to give you an idea of what is likely. If customers want to be very specific in what they want or J-Spec is happy to take longer to find a car if needed, as long as customers understand that things may be slower as that will narrow the pool of cars to choose from. J-Spec would rather take longer to find the RIGHT car for a someone rather than just buy something quickly to get a customer out of the way, so if you are in a hurry to get a vehicle we would normally advise patience as you are likely to end up with a better condition car in the long run. Although in reality it means more work for us, taking our time to find that right condition car often pays big dividends, and customers can come away with a much nicer car at a much better price as a result. Anyone who claims that they can find a car faster than J-Spec and is using this as a selling point and may not be looking after your interests.... faster isn't better!

Once purchased vehicles usually take around 3 - 4 months to be shipped, arrive in Australia, clear customs and quarantine, and be complied, ready to register. The main variables in this time frame are shipping schedules since we have no control over these, and the time to comply a vehicle as some compliance workshops are faster than others. It's rare for it to normally take significantly longer than this unless there are unusual circumstances, for WA or SA customers occasionally shipping is a little slower as shipping is less regular or takes longer than to other states.

A very rough breakdown of the timing from time of purchase would be:

  • 1 week: vehicle purchased to be finalized and moved to the port for shipping
  • 4 - 8 weeks: waiting for the next ship
  • 2 - 3 weeks: shipping
  • 1 - 2 weeks: customs clearance
  • 1 week: inland transportation within Australia
  • 2 - 4 weeks: compliance
