Daihatsu Copen
The Copen (LA400K series) is a small, convertible kei-car fun mobile made by Daihatsu. A kei car is a special catergory of vehicle in Japan designed to ease congestion and reduce emissions as the ultimate town car. Kei cars have restrictions on their size, engine capacity and even power output.
Interestingly, the Copen was designed with 13 outer body panels that can be replaced or customized for a different look... what Daihatsu calls a "dressformation". As such there are a few different looking versions of the same car available including the Robe, the Cero and the XPlay, with more info on each below.
The Copen gets excellent fuel economy at 4.8L / 100km (25.3km per litre) as the cited specs, power is from a turbo charged 660cc engine with a 5 speed manual or 7 speed continuously variable transmission (CVT). Power is the Japanese kei car maximum limit of 47kW, the performance is far superior to what this figure suggests given the lightweight body and close ratio gearboxes.
The new Copen introduced in 2014 replaces the popular previous version sold for a decade. Handling has been drastically improved with the new chassis being 3 times stronger than the original.
